Health Care and Higher Education are critically important to the economic vitality and competitiveness of the province as well as to the well-being and personal development of all Ontarians. Spending by the Government of Ontario on the Health and Postsecondary Sectors accounted for more than 43% of the 2021 provincial budget. In both sectors, however, Ontario’s per capita spending was lower than other provinces’ expenditures and Ontario spends significantly more on debt service than on higher education. This impact is magnified by the contribution of university research to advancing knowledge in matters from biochemistry to the social determinants of health.
